A Lesson I’ve Learned From Studying Music Theory

Hello everyone. 🙂

In this blog post, I am discussing one of the things that I enjoy: music theory. I once saw a comment on an online discussion board that basically said that music theory is to music what grammar is to English. As someone who enjoys musical composition, I see the value of music theory.

I appreciate the musical knowledge I’ve gained from studying music theory which I can apply to my musical creations, thus creating more variation in my arrangements and compositions. One thing that I appreciate about music theory is that it provides an opportunity for exercising faith. Faith, you say? Yes: faith.

Music is full of rules that actually work when creating different kinds of intervals and chords. When I use the rule for changing a Major triad to a diminished triad, that rule will work in any key! I can move from an easier key such as G Major to a difficult key such as C# Major, and the same thing that I do to change a Major triad in G Major into a diminished triad will change a Major triad in C# Major into a diminished triad.

If any formula that I find tells me that lowering certain notes and raising others will create a certain kind of interval or chord, it will! I can, by faith, use the formulas I’ve learned in any key and get the same results. So, you see, music theory provides an opportunity for musical composers to exercise faith! We can believe that the formulas we have learned work, and we can put them to work and prove that they do work!

I appreciate the reality that we can see spiritual lessons in everyday things. God has lessons to teach us and friendly reminders to give us through our work and our play (and yes, we adults do still like to play, as we all know. 🙂 ). My encouragement to all of us is to keep our eyes and ears open for the lessons that God may be trying to teach us through our duties and our hobbies. Let’s invite God into our whole lives and see how He brings enrichment and inspiration into each and every day.

I hope that you all have gained something valuable from this simple blog post. I also hope that you all will stay tuned for my next blog post which will be a continuation of my series on Bible prophecy. This upcoming blogpost will be on the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary as discussed in the 2300 Days prophecy.

Blessings. 🙂

I’m just a young lady who is journeying through life with Jesus. I have much to learn and unlearn and I’m so grateful to be able to be guided by God in my growing process. I desire to learn and grow forever. May I never find a complacent, stopping point! As long as I continue to humbly walk with God, I will forever be His work in progress (adapted from the "About" page on my blog learnandgrow4ever.com).
